Vega Complete Whole Food Health Optimizer, Vanilla Chai Flavor, 34.9 oz

I am a shake fanatic. I am always in search of the perfect shake and the perfect bar. I haven't found the the perfect bar yet, but I have found the perfect meal replacement, it is Vega. Vanilla Chai is my personal favorite because it tastes great mixed with water. Yes, it is pricey. But it is well worth the cost. It takes the place of so many supplements. There is no need for a multivitamin, calcium/magnesium, omega-3, green supplement, or energy supplement. It is all here. Vega has 2.5g of Maca, which is great for hormone balance, endocrine glands, and energy. I have suffered with adrenal problems for years and this product has made more difference than any combination of products I have taken in the past. It contains 2.5g of Chlorella which is a great heavy metal and liver detoxifier. Vega has 15g of fiber which is over half our daily requirements. Finally, and most importantly, it is filling and really does replace a meal. I highly recommend it!

Fisher-Price Rainforest Healthy Care Booster Seat

We own 2 of these regular non-rainforest high chairs, plus 1 with the rainforest toys for Grandma's house. It's love! But your probably don't need the rainforest version.

We have limited space, so one of these is our permanent kitchen high chair, strapped securely onto one of our dining room chairs. It adjusts to 3 heights based on the chair's height from the table and the baby's size, and the tray comes with 3 pieces which are dishwasher safe (tray, divided tray insert, and a cover). The tray can also be put into 3 different distances from your baby's tummy depending on his clothing and size.

The tray is very easy to get on and off in a hurry. This is good for when your child inevitably gags or chokes and you need to get to him in a hurry. Also, unlike other high chairs that we've used, he can't remove the tray himself. Some other styles of high chair have a pull latch on the front of the tray--which has the big design flaw of releasing when it's easily kicked!

This folds into a nice, trunk-friendly bundle for carrying around in your car for visiting relatives, etc. The back of the seat has a handle for your hand, or you can use the under-chair strap as a shoulder strap for carrying. I also prefer to take it into restaurants to have the tray available instead of pushing a high chair up to a table. The snap-in tray cover keeps the food tray clean no matter what else is bouncing around in your trunk.

Now we have a second basic one which permanently lives in the car until our next baby comes along, then we will have both our kids in these at the dining room table.

When the baby becomes a toddler, you can stop using the tray and use it as a regular booster chair with the adjustable height for any chair/table height combo.

We bought the rainforest version when we flew out to Grandma's house to keep there. It is super cute, but there is a VERY NARROW window of time in which your baby will be a) big enough to play with it and b) small enough to be interested in this instead of food. The toy insert is snap-in and easily removable. But, it does not get any more compact, which really increases the amount of space it takes up (if that's a concern for you). You can theoretically remove the toys from the "jungle" to conserve space, but they snap in very securely so it's a pain. So, when we traveled with Grandma and Grandpa to the beach, etc, the rainforest part stayed behind. Plus, our baby at 1 year old was too old to be interested in it for very long. He just wanted to eat and then get down and crawl/walk around instead of hanging out and playing with the toys. I hoped it would buy us some time at the table, but not at this age! Maybe for a younger baby.

The Happiest Baby on the Block: The New Way to Calm Crying and Help Your Newborn Baby Sleep Longer

The advice in this book is pure magic. Our baby wasn't colicky but she was Very fussy. Everytime I did what this book suggested - swaddle, jiggle, hold sideways, and shush - she would stop crying instantly. Yes, Instantly. It was like pure magic. Nothing worked before this book. I encourage everyone to buy it, it is a life-saver.

I agree with a previous review, in that it is most helpful the first three months. That's what it's geared towards. The author calls it the fourth trimester and focuses on that. After I started swaddling her (as the author clearly isslustrates how to do) my daughter started sleeping through the night. I no longer need this book because I was able to be so responsive to her needs in the first three months, that she is now secure enough to sleep on her own without being swaddled.

This book is also very well organized. As a matter of fact, you don't even have to read the whole book! He has helpful summaries and bullet points along the way. Just reading one page where he clearly and succinctly summarizes everything can save your life the first three months and get your baby on the road to being a trusting, self-suffient child.

This book did more than just help me soothe my infant. It increased my self-esteem as a parent. I knew that jiggling my baby soothed her. But the horrified looks on people's faces when you start jiggling a baby! Oh my! At least after reading this book it helped me know that it was indeed ok to do what intutively worked.

Also, the author is right - there's no spoling a baby. I "spoiled" my daughter like crazy. And what do I have now? A clingly baby who is addicted to jiggling and swaddling (as many people predicted when I followed the author's advice - "she'll be addicted and you'll have to swaddle her FOREVER!"). No! I have a happy baby who goes to sleep on her own and sleeps through the night. By the way, she's 4 months old. She Never needs to be jiggled anymore, or swaddled. I still put white noise on in the background for her though. But I hear many adults sleep that way too.

This book is also very sensitve and kind to the needs of our precious little babies. He says that the first three months are the fourth trimester. That the baby was in you for nine whole months and got used to there being sound and movement and confinement. And when they're born it's unnatural (and, in my opinion, cruel) to leave them to their own devices and figure out how to be a human being in the world right away. They need our help while they get their bearings. They're so tiny and the world is so big.

As a matter of fact, many book I read suggest not swaddling past the second month, or even past the first month. But the author recommends doing it for as long as the baby needs it. All babies are different and need to take their own time! And not only for as long as the baby needs it, but also as much as the baby needs it. That's right, swaddle the baby as often as the baby wants it. Some books say this hinders development but the author points out that if the baby needs it, it calms the baby down enough for the baby to be a ble to pay attention to the world and learn. My baby wanted to be swaddled for many hours out of every day. I felt guilty becuase so many other resources say not to do that. But this book helped me see that it was only natural. The author asked - doesn't your baby seem happier this way? YES!! She was So much happier when she was swaddled. And this did not make her addicted to it, as I said before - she went from being swaddled most of the day to not being swaddled Ever quickly and effortlessly.

I know this is a long review. I just have to strongly recommend this book. It's usefuleness and help go so much beyond sleeping issues. I love this book. It is the single most useful book I have ever read.

Compromising Positions

This is the third book I've read by Jenna-Bayley Burke and I think this is my favorite so far! It's hard to tell though, because I've enjoyed everything I've read by her. What I think she excels at is mixing the lust, romance and love all together and making it work! This is the story of Sophie and David. Sophie is a cute girl who seems to think never of herself but only those around her. David is a strong man, quite successful but definitely scarred by some events in his past. He is a tall man who has a rule of dating only women who are at least 5'10" and have blonde hair. He NEVER stays over, and NEVER goes for round two. Sophie is a tiny yoga instructor and also the sister of Daphne, David's best friend, Craig's wife. Daphne has long despised David for his womanizing ways. Sophie has had a crush on David for as long as Daphne and Craig have been together. She is a 26 year old virgin, just waiting for David to come along. They get together quite by accident--Daphne is pregnant and having a difficult pregnancy and must be on bed rest. Normally she and her husband, Craig, teach the yoga class that helps intrepret the Kuma Sutra to committed couples. Exit Daphne and Craig for the class, enter Sophie and David. Right from the get go David is attracted to Sophie even though she doesn't fit into his rules. From the very beginning of the story there is constant contact with Sophie and David. Even though Sophie is terrified of having her heart broken, and David is terrified of letting someone in who throws his carefully planned life in a whirlwind they do work together to be together. It's a great story of friendship, of sibling love and of misguided parental love. If you've never read anything by Jenna this would be the perfect book for you to start with! And I'm sure, if you're like me, you'll want to read everything by her. As this is a Samhain published book there is a bit more spice to it than most contemporary love stories, but make no mistake this is a tastefully written story of deep love and emotional committment.

The No-Cry Sleep Solution: Gentle Ways to Help Your Baby Sleep Through the Night

OK, I admit it. I bought all of them. Here's how they compare:Ferber: Advocates crying to sleep with parent soothing on a time schedule. Put your baby in the crib. Come back to pat and say soothing words at 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, etc. Increase the times every night. Hopefully your baby will stop crying and go to sleep. Lots of scientific discussion about sleep.
Weissbluth: Advocates crying to sleep without parent soothing. Open-ended time - no limit. You are "leaving him alone to forget the expectation to be picked up." Has a section on children over 7 years old.
Mindell: Advocates crying to sleep with parent soothing, on a schedule similar to Ferber but with more frequent checks on the baby.
Pantley: Advocates using gentle techniques to avoid crying. Focus on understanding why baby is waking and fixing problems with routines, new associations, and gradual changes in patterns. Supportive of breastfeeding and co-sleeping as well as crib sleeping and bottle feeding.

Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child

This was an excellent book - I cannot tell you how much this book helped our sleepless, colicky infant. But, several friends with non-colicky babies actually recommended this for any infant. This book is a wonderful middle ground for those parents who do not want a severe schedule (BABYWISE) or the opposite end of the spectrum, attachment parenting (Dr. Sears). It was the only book that I found that spoke knowledgeably about colic, and gave the only helpful advice available on the subject (believe me, we tried it all). It is not a cry-it-out book, although some may look at it in that light. What it teaches you is this: 1. watch your child. 2. put him/her down to sleep when you first see the signs of tiredness 3. most children under 6 months do not stay awake for longer than 2-3 hours at a time without needing a nap. 4. DO NOT just put your child down to nap when you feel like it - that's just letting him/her cry, not TEACHING them to sleep. 5. Most children need to go to sleep at night earlier than you'd think. 6. Going to bed earlier promotes later sleeping (weird, but true. As the author says, it's not logical. It's biological - sleep promotes sleep) There's a lot more too. I really like that the author's data is based on studies that he has done involving the patterns of children who naturally sleep and nap well. No, it didn't give us a perfect baby. We happen to have a very sensitive high strung girlie, who also power-naps. But we went from a cranky post-colicky baby who took no naps or 15-20min naps and got up many times per night to a sweet smiling girl who now takes 3 45min-1 hour naps per day and sleeps from 6pm-7am (waking 2 times to nurse). Oh yes. The nursing. She used to think that nursing was the only way to get to sleep. After diligently following the advice in this book, she now can get to sleep on her own, no nursing. Not that it's perfect - she still cries 5-15 minutes at times before naps. But she is sooooooo much happier now. Gotta think something's working.
